Call for contributors

Mustapiste is an artist-run online journal based in Helsinki, Finland. We aim to share quality content related to experimental music, sound art and other artistic practices in Helsinki (and other parts of Finland too if possible).

If you’re an artist, artistic researcher, or an art-lover with the eager to express your thoughts in written words – welcome to contribute!

What we publish

– A review about an event in Helsinki or other places in Finland

It can be a concert, a performance, an exhibition…

Any kind of event with a spirit of experimenting, you name it!

– A review about an publication (published in Finland or published else where but involves Finland-based artists)

It can be a book, an album, a zine…

Any kind of publication related to experimental music, sound art (…and more) that is published in Finland or else where but involves Finland-based artist(s).

– Your point of view about experimental music in Helsinki or Finland

It can be a topic related to experimental music, sound art, or other disciplinary of art (you name it!).

For example, you can write about your observation of an artisitc phenomenon in Helsinki or Finland, or a reflection of your own artistic practice.

– A travelogue about your journey of experimental art

If you are based in Finland and has travelled to other countries, welcome to share your experience and observation in other parts of the world!

If you are not based in Finland, but has travelled to Finland before, welcome to share your experience in Finland!

Editorial guidelines

– Length: around 1000 words (longer articles will be reviewed by case)

Note: the article should never been published before!

– Voice and tone: semi-casual, semi-serious and semi-academic

We’re not an academic journal. We hope our content is a good company to the morning coffee when our new article arrives in the subscribers’ email box.

– Language and style: British English, and MLA style for citations and references if applicable

– Image and media: we do not include image and media in the text. An image is only used as the cover on homepage and social media posts. Link(s) to video or sound can be included at the end of the article if applicable.

– Core values: diversity, inclusivity, equality

Since August 2025, we’re a self-run journal with two editor’s voluntary work. Currently, we’re applying for grants to keep up with the project.
